Barnes Wallis Academy celebrates GCSE results
53% secure a Grade 9 – 4 in Maths and English; an increase of 10 percentage points from 2018 results
Students at Barnes Wallis Academy are today celebrating their GCSE results, with 53% securing Grades 9-4 in English and Mathematics. Part of the David Ross Education Trust, the Academy has performed well under the new, tougher GCSE exams.
Performances in English and Modern Foreign Languages were particularly notable, with 76% and 64% respectively achieving Grade 4 and above. Students taking BTEC Child Development gained an impressive number of top distinction* and merit grades.
2018 saw the introduction of the new exams in virtually all GCSE subjects. Under the new grading system, 9 – 1 replaces the old A* – G, with a grade 7 equating to an A and a 4 reading across to a C.
Overall, Barnes Wallis Academy has seen an improvement on last year’s results, with some star performances from a number of students:
- Abbie Williams gained a distinction*, a distinction, an A, three grade 7s and two grade 6s
- Danny Sutherland gained a distinction, an A, a grade 7 and five grade 6s
- Other students achieved the Academy’s best grades in its history, with Erwin Polewacz achieving the Academy’s first ever grade 9 and Ruth Morris gaining a grade 8 in English, and Jesse Martin achieving a grade 8 in Mathematics.

The Academy achieving some of its best ever grades, and a significant increase of 10 percentage points in the number of students gaining a grade 4 and above in English and Mathematics, is testament to the hard work and application of our students and the dedicated staff who teach and support them.
